You’re Invited to a Wedding!
Julie Robertson and Daniel Day's wedding is Saturday, September 6th, 2:00pm, at CUCC. A simple reception will follow in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall. Church family is welcome. No gifts please - thanks!

Communion Table Flowers
The Communion table flowers are given this Sunday, Grandparents’ Day, by John and Julie Robertson, in memory of John’s beloved adopted grandparents, Cy and Carolyn King.

Welcoming Sunday is This Sunday, September 7th!
Welcoming Sunday is our Homecoming.  Join us as we welcome everyone back from the summer with a variety of activities: games, crafts, music, social justice activities - and food!  We will meet in the sanctuary at 10:30am and then gather in the main church yard where the festivities begin.  Please bring a pot luck dish to share. Invite family, friends and neighbors to visit with us. All are welcome!  See you on September 7!

Claim your 30-seconds of fame
At Welcoming Sunday last year, Welcoming, Fellowship, and Growth Ministry invited members and friends of the church to say a few words "on camera" about what they like about the church or what draws them to CUCC. During the fall of 2013 these clips were rotated on the church website as a way of presenting a human face to our Internet presence. (We are a church of people, not of buildings.) This year we invite you again to take part in this videographic event which paints a picture of who we are. The camera will be set up in the Bradow Room during the Welcoming Sunday festivities following 10:30 worship. The camera will be running constantly. Just drop in at the Bradow Room, sit down, and have your say. Thanks on behalf of WFG!

Food Bags for Urban Ministries Due this Sunday
Food Bags for the Urban Ministries Food Pantry are due this Sunday, September 7th.   Linda Baker graciously gathers and takes the food bags over to Urban Ministries, so PLEASE DOUBLE-BAG YOUR ITEMS; and, if you sort them into two bags, please tie them together or label the bags so that we know they go together.  Bring them to the church and drop them off in the shopping cart located in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall. You may also drop them off at the Pilgrim house during office hours (9:00am-1:00pm, M-F).  The items to include in a food bag are:
1 lb. grits                                   1 lb. rice                           1 lb. dried beans
2 cans tomatoes                        2 cans applesauce           1 jar peanut butter
2 macaroni & cheese                 2 1-qt pkgs dry milk         1 can of carrots
2 cans navy, pinto or pork ‘n beans

Life & Faith in Downtown Raleigh – September 9th
Life& Faith in Downtown Raleigh will meet Tuesday, September 9th.  New people are welcomed enthusiastically.  Those who come set the topic for the night as we ponder how to connect what we believe to what we do - 6:30pm for those who want dinner; 7:00pm for beverage-only people.  Dutch treat. Look for our red Life & Faith comma at the corner round table at Tyler’s Tap Room - 18 Seaboard Avenue, #150, Raleigh, NC. For more information, contact Jane Smith.

Communion will be Served on the Second Sunday in September
We will celebrate Communion next Sunday, September 14.  Next Sunday is also ONA Sunday.  Please join us as the ONA Task Force leads the service and we celebrate communion together.

Fall Sunday School class will begin Sunday, September 14th
It will be good to welcome everyone back after our summer vacations.  We have exciting things planned.  Our biggest news is that we will be having music in Sunday School this year led by Anne Moorman-Smith and her daughter, Erin Moorman Wenger.  The plan is to have music twice a month!  We will begin in September!

All Youth (6th-12th grade) Church School Kick-Off
On Sunday, September 14, all youth (6th-12th grade) will participate in our Church School Kick-Off, followed by lunch and games together. Parents, please pick up your youth at 2:00pm.

Save the Dates! Forum Resumes September 14th
The CUCC Forum for September will be led by The ONA Task Force. Forum meets from 9:15am - 10:15am, in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall.

September 7:  NO FORUM – Welcoming Sunday.  During the Welcoming Sunday Fellowship, you are invited to help design and create signs for the NC Pride event.  Materials are provided.  We will be in the Hoffman Room.

September 14: Tracy Hollister will lead a presentation and discussion on marriage equality.  This is a great opportunity to learn why this issue matters; the status of the efforts to overturn Amendment One, and what you can do to help foster acceptance of LGBT marriage in North Carolina.

September 21: Jonah Pierce, Charge Nurse at UNC’s Infectious Diseases Clinic, will be giving us stories from the personal side of HIV/AIDS: How long are people surviving?  Are people getting the medications they need?  What about those who are sick and who are not getting the support of family or friends?  How might volunteers from CUCC assist with the needs of these patients?

September 28: Dr. Charles van der Horst, physician for HIV/AIDS patients at UNC’s Infectious Diseases Clinic, and strong advocate for Medicaid expansion, will be joining us to talk about the impact on patients resulting from the continued erosion of medical benefits for his patients.   Dr. van der Horst has been an iconic figure at Moral Monday events and is a passionate advocate for health care.

New Parent Meeting for Those New to Youth Program
On Saturday, September 13, we will have a New Parent Meeting for those new to the youth program. While this meeting will focus on listening to and informing new parents, all parents are welcome. It will take place upstairs in the Pilgrim House from 9:30am -11:00am. Coffee, juice, and muffins provided. Parents, please respond to Śānti Matthews (forsanti@aol.com or 919-961-8814) to indicate whether or not you will be able to make this meeting.

Pray at the Legislature
Every Tuesday, from 12:30pm to 1:00pm, Duane Beck from the Mennonite Church meets with some of us. Go in the front door off of Jones Street. Turn left and meet at a table in the garden area.  Scriptures will be provided if requested.

Volunteers Needed for Wake Federation of the Blind
The Wake Federation of the Blind, the local chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, will host the annual state convention of North Carolina from Thursday, September 18 through Sunday, September 21, 2014, at the Crabtree Holiday Inn.  Robert Parrish, Vice President of the local chapter, is looking for volunteers to assist in helping blind and visually impaired individuals at this convention.  We need volunteers to help people check into the hotel, guidance to their rooms and other areas, and help blind with serving their food in the hospitality room.  The main days that assistance will be needed are Thursday, September 18, and Friday, September 19.  If you wish to volunteer, please call Robert at 919-616-1606 or email at rcp7@bellsouth.net.  Some orientation on how to guide blind and visually impaired individuals will be provided by Robert.

Basement Keys Missing
If you borrowed the Basement keys that normally hang on the church office door, please return them as soon as possible.  Thanks!

Updated Church Directories
The Current Church Directory (not the one with pictures) has recently been updated.  If you would like a current directory, please email the church office and request one.  The church email is office.cucc@gmail.com.

West Raleigh Presbyterian Church – Fall Art Exhibition
You’re invited to submit artwork:  The Circle of Life is the theme of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church’s fall exhibition in the Voice of the Spirit Gallery.   This theme is rich with possibilities for interpretations in visual and literary arts.

There are many references in the Bible to this circle/cycle from birth to death.  Sometimes it is the changing of the seasons:  For everything there is a season… (Ecc. 3:1). Sometimes it signifies maturing as in 1 Cor. 13:1:  When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways.

What do these words mean to you? How could you interpret it in paint, clay, jewelry, or other art media?  Maybe you are not inclined to think about this topic as visual art, but would to write a poem or short story. We would be happy to display your written work in the gallery and/or post it on our arts website.

All works should be submitted to Room 103 on Sunday, September 7 or 14 after church.  If you have questions please contact Barbara Carlson at jerrybarbara333@gmail.com.
