Monday Lunch Group celebrates Geradine Bryan's 90th birthday

On October 27, the Monday Lunch Group celebrated the 90th birthday of Geraldine Bryan. (Her actual birthday was October 25). The program included chocolate cake (pre-arranged at the CUCC auction last spring) and ice cream, and lots of stories about Geraldine. Normally Monday Lunch Group ends about 1:45 PM, but at this party folks had to be pushed at the door about 2:10 because the merriment was not winding down. Guests included Arnold and Peggy Hoffman's daughter Rosemary, and Judy Smallwood and Sally Cook who live at Carol Woods in Chapel Hill.

Singing the Sacred Songs on November 22 at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church

As we approach the hectic holiday season, you are warmly invited to prepare for Advent with a day of Taizé music and quiet reflection entitled Singing the Sacred Songs. We will gather at Pullen’s Poteat Chapel on Saturday, November 22, from 9:30 AM – 2:00 PM to sing familiar Taizé songs and learn new ones in a restful, spacious atmosphere. The cost of the retreat is $10, which includes a vegetarian lunch.

November Forum series announced: Greenhouses Gases and What We Can Do

Community United Church of Christ Adult Forum series
Nov 2 – Dec 7, 2014
Presented by the Justice in a Changing Climate (JCC) Task Force

Week one - Nov 2.  “Birds and climate change:  Save the Songs”

North America's birds are and will continue to be affected by the impact of climate change on their existing and future habitats. Many species that breed, nest, migrate or winter in North Carolina are among those at risk.  According to a landmark study released by The National Audubon Society (Birds and Climate Change), hundreds of species will be threatened or endangered in our children's lifetime.   Of the 588 continental United States and Canadian bird species examined in the seven-year study, 314 species are at risk.  214 of these species spend time in North Carolina.

Help our friends and get into the fair free!

Cathy Cralle Jones is a gym buddy who is also a member of our sister congregation, St. Paul's Christian Church (our Maundy Thursday worship partners).  She mentioned that they are scurrying to fill all the slots for this annual ministry at the state fair and wondered if I would mind passing along the invitation to folks at CUCC.  So read below to see if you might be able to contribute a few hours to help out our friends.  I signed up for Wed. the 22nd!   posted by Jane Smith

Cathy's email to me:  Thank you so much for passing this invitation onto your congregation.  We'd love to have an opportunity to work and serve more closely with our friends at Community UCC.  I've copied Peggy McRight on this email as she is our Fair Chair and can answer any additional questions folks may have.

UNC Infectious Diseases Clinic Coat Drive

The Infectious Diseases Clinic at UNC is having a coat drive for their patients.  Many of their patients come to the clinic with no coat or maybe a light windbreaker because they can’t afford a warm winter coat.   If you have a child’s or adult coat that you would like to donate, please drop it off at the church office or in the box provided in the Vaughan Fellowship Hall by Sunday, October 12 th .   If you have any questions, please contact Cathy Marshall at the church office.

This coat drive is an outgrowth of what we learned in September during the Forum focus sponsored by our Open and Affirming Task Force.

Come Help PLM Families Together Grow!

PLM Families Together has received a free playground for the families they support!  Now, all they need are people to help them install it!  The group is asking for volunteers on any of the following three dates - October 27, 28, 29 - for various tasks from building, to signing people in, to helping with children's activities, medical volunteers, and food.  Builders must be 14 years or older, but there will be activities available for younger children to participate in on October 29.  PLM FT would love to have a strong CUCC presence helping out.  If you are interested in learning more about this fun opportunity, please contact Laurel Powell.
